Matsumoto Yoko: The Day I Saw the Evening Star

Matsumoto Yoko: The Day I Saw the Evening Star

About the Exhibition

Matsumoto Yoko (1936–) began pursuing abstract painting in the late 1950s. In the 1960s, encounters with acrylic paint and cotton canvas in the United States led her to develop a singular pictorial language characterized by radiant light and color. Since returning to oil painting in the late 1990s, she has continued an active and sustained practice. Amid a growing international reappraisal in recent years, this exhibition traces Matsumoto’s creative trajectory, from her earliest works to the present, and includes new paintings created specifically for this exhibition.

Biography

Born in Tokyo in 1936. Graduated from the Oil-Painting Department, Faculty of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts in 1960. Won the 10th Anniversary Grand Prize at The Modern Art Exhibition the same year, and since then has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions. Stayed in Cleveland and New York between 1967 and 1968, and from the 1970s opened her own horizons in abstract painting using acrylic paints. Later returned to oil painting and held exhibitions such as “Artists Today X: Nishimura Morio / Matsumoto Yoko” at The Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura in 2005, and “Light: Matsumoto Yoko / Noguchi Rika” at the National Art Center, Tokyo in 2009. Currently participating in the international touring exhibition “Kaihō: Japanese Women Artists after 1945 (at the MUDAM Luxembourg and others).
