Drift and Origin
EGUCHI Shu
Sculptures / Drawings

September 22 – December 24, 2012

Two exhibitions will be held simultaneously;"French Prints and Publication in the 20th Century—Chagall, Matisse, and Tériade" at Gallery1; "EGUCHI Shu : Sculptures & Drawings" at Gallery 2 and Sculpture Gallery.

EGUCHI Shu (b.1932) is known for his wooden sculptures made of camphor tree and overflowing with mass. He began to attract attention from the early 1960s and extracts the alternative sculpture hidden in the form unique to the material by means of the power of an unyielding determination towards the constructive space. He unfolds a sculptural world in which the forms are simple yet filled with complex and richly tense spirituality. EGUCHI’s drawings instantaneously capture the feelings and ideas that the sculptor entertains at the initial stage of production. They illustrate his thoughts, the process of his creations, and the sculptor’s intentions, which cannot be deciphered from the completed sculpture alone. This is exhibition consists of works created in the 1960s and recent works. Through his drawings and sculptures, the development of the work by this leading authority in abstract sculpture is reexamined.
