Sculpted Spirits in Wood: SUNAZAWA Bikky

April 8 - June 18, 2017

This is the first individual exhibition featuring the postwar master sculptor SUNAZAWA Bikky (1931-1989) to be held in a public museum in Honshu. Born to Ainu parents in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, Sunazawa was active at the Modern Art Association and other groups from the 1950s to the 1960s. Shown in this exhibition are approximately twenty sculptures including the Mask series from the 1970s when the artist reached maturity, God's Tongue, and TOH. With over forty additional paintings and drawings, the world of Sunazawa Bikky representing his empathy with nature is explored.

Two exhibitions are held simultaneously; "Sculpted Spirits in Wood: SUNAZAWA Bikky" at Gallery 2 and 3, "From Museum Collection: Energetic Individuality in Japanese Art of the Taisho Era at Gallery 1.
