Alberto GIACOMETTI and YANAIHARA Isaku

3 June - 30 July 2006

Cosponsored by the Fondation Alberto et Annette Giacometti, Paris, this exhibition introduces the entirety of Alberto GIACOMETTI (1901-1966), an exceptional explorer of 20th century art. It focuses especially on his point of contact with the Japanese philosopher, YANAIHARA Isaku (1918-1989) who was his model and recorder.
Giacometti has spent all his life pursuing the impossibly difficult - to express exactly what he saw with his eyes. Figures as thin as needles, personage that comes out of the gray background, these extremely original images found during his search have left a mark in 20th century art and engraved his name in its history.
For this exhibition, over 140 works of sculptures, oil paintings and dessins as well as newly discovered documents has been gathered to convey the entirety of the artist, some of which are on display for the first time. Artworks by Giacometti which represents Yanaihara as model has not been well known till today, but with the cooperation of the Giacometti foundation, we are able to publicly exhibit 9 oil paintings and 2 plaster sculptures portraying Yanaihara, and includes one particular portrait which has never been exhibited before. We would like to mention that the oil painting "Portrait of Yanaihara I" owned by the Pompidou center will only be exhibited at the Kanagawa museum of modern art. Also on display are the desseins left at the family house of Yanaihara and a sculpture presented as a personal gift to USAMI Eiji who was an expert in French literature and poet, all of which are now part of the museum collection.
