AKINO Fuku:
Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Artist's Birth

Bringing together more than 140 paintings, drawings and preparatory studies for book illustrations by Akino Fuku(1908-2001), this exhibition explores the whole development of the artist’s work.

Born in Shizuoka Prefecture, Akino began her study of Japanese style painting in 1929 in Kyoto. The following year, her work was first accepted by Teiten, official exhibition of Japan. She then developed her career presenting regularly her works at the official salons. After the World War II, decided to renew the Japanese style painting, she participated the foundation of Sozo Bijutsu(the present Soga-kai), non-official group of Japanese painters, with Uemura Shoko, Fukuda Toyoshiro and Yoshioka Kenji among others. Since 1949 she taught painting at Kyoto City University of Arts.

1962 made a turning point for her art. At the age of 54, she was invited as visiting professor for Visva-Bharati University to India and stayed there for one year. This experience gave her painting a new scale. Famous for her landscapes of the eternal soil of India and for her vivid portraiture of the people living there, she created new horizon for the Japanese style painting.
