"Pantagruel" Prints by André Derain and New Acquisition

André Derain (1880 - 1954) is known as a master painter of modern French painting. He is acknowledged as a painter who led Fauvism, an avant-garde movement known for its use of primary colors and its break from tradition which had been realism oriented, with Vlaminck and Matisse around 1905. Despite being famous as a Fauvist painter, in the 1920s, Derain had none the less inclined towards the classic style represented by painters such as Poussin. He had also designed the stage decoration for The Russian Ballets. His various activities had led him to create the woodcuts for the book "Pantagruel" in 1943, based on the story written by François Rabelais. The fantastic world of Rabelais is colorfully represented through multicolored single print woodcuts, most probably inspired by playing cards and tarot cards.

Alongside 30 of Derain's woodcuts, there will be lithographs by Antoni Clavé (1913 - 2005) who had also based his works on the story of "Gargantua". Newly acquired works of the museum collection will be exhibited simultaneously.
