FUJIMAKI Yoshio: Centennial of His Birth

January 21 – March 25, 2012

Born in Tatebayashi of Gunma Prefecture, FUJIMAKI Yoshio (1911-1935?) suddenly went missing at age 24, leaving works that cast striking splendor on the world of sosaku hanga (creative prints) in Japan. Focusing mainly on the districts of Ueno and Asakusa, Fujimaki depicted landscapes of Tokyo in the 1930s, a decade after the Great Kanto Earthquake. This exhibition surveys 200 works including woodcut prints, drawings, Hakubyo-emaki (plain-drawing scrolls) , and related materials of his lifetime. Animated images of Hakubyo-emaki are projected during the exhibition, to reveal all scenes described in those scrolls.
