ISHIMOTO Yasuhiro　Katsura Imperial Villa

ISHIMOTO Yasuhiro (1921-2012) was born in San Francisco. He spent his childhood in his father's hometown Kochi and went to the United States again in 1939. He studied photography at the Institute of Design in Chicago, which carries on the educational ideals of the New Bauhaus. From around 1953, he traveled back and forth between Japan and the U.S. and had enormous influence on the world of photography in postwar Japan. From 1969 onwards, he continued to work energetically based in Japan.

The museum in Kamakura, where this exhibition takes place, was designed by SAKAKURA Junzo (1901-1969) in 1951. In resonation with the exhibition space, from among the vast range of ISHIMOTO's works, we shall focus on the Katsura Imperial Villa series produced in 1953 and 1954. This should prove a rare chance to rediscover how high a level modernism had reached in Japan soon after the war.

To celebrate ICOM's International Museum Day, the admission to all exhibitions of The Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura & Hayama, namely “SUDA Kunitaro: Looking Back 50 Years After His Death” at HAYAMA, “ISHIMOTO Yasuhiro　Katsura Imperial Villa” at KAMAKURA, and “YUNOKI Samiro” at KAMAKURA ANNEX, is free on Friday, 18 May. This is an occasion to raise awareness on how important museums are in the development of our society.
