The 1950s in Japan may be considered as a period during which artists who had experienced the defeat in World War II were in search of a way to live and a way to express themselves in the aftermath of the war. While there are works which look explicitly at the war or turn their eyes to familiar issues, there are also many works which are neither figurative nor abstract. In the late 1950s, contrary to the gradual recovery of social order, an abstract expression called informel, which means "without form”, became predominant. This exhibition features the art of the 1950s, which reveals diverse aspects, mainly through pictures selected from our own museum collection.

- "Family Communication Day" - reduced entry for all family members (except for 65 and over) accompanied by children under 18 on the first Sunday every month (February 3 and March 3, 2013).
