KATAOKA Tamako
Japanese Style Paintings and Sketches

April 6 - May 26, 2013

KATAOKA Tamako (1905-2008) was born in Sapporo, Hokkaido. Throughout her approximately 80-year-long career as a nihonga artist until she died at the age of 103, she left many sketchbooks. The sketches done in pencil, watercolor, pastel, and felt-tip pen are drawings directly portraying the ideas or feelings she had at the initial stage of working on a certain picture or studies that, by being compared to the eventual painting, clearly demonstrate the process of her work. In that sense, they can be considered the origin of her creations or the basis of the materialization of her works. Sketchbooks will be displayed together with the eventual paintings. Kataoka's works continue to pose significant questions not only to the world of nihonga but extensively to contemporary painting. This should prove a rare opportunity to reconfirm the development of her sparkling yet unyielding work.
