A Centennial Retrospective

June 8 - September 1, 2013



MATSUDA Shohei (1913-2004) was born in Nichiharacho, Shimane. When he was about four years old, he was adopted by the Matsuda family in Ube, Yamaguchi. In 1938, he went to study in Paris. However, due to the outbreak of the Second World War, he returned to Japan the following year. In 1947, he visited Iwai Island across the sea from Ube, Yamaguchi for the first time and began working on the Suonada series, which was to make Matsuda's name known to the world and became his lifelong theme. Throughout his lifetime, he also painted profound oil paintings based on familiar themes such as roses, dogs, and fish.
Marking the centennial of his birth, presented here are approximately 101 works from when he was studying in Paris to his later years in order to look back on the achievements of this unrivaled, distinctive artist.
