KANAYAMA Yasuki in Paris - Japanese Painters in the 1950s

January 24 - March 22, 2015

KANAYAMA Yasuki (1926-1959) went to France to study economics in 1951 and there, he got absorbed in painting, to which he had been attracted from before. In the French art circles of the 1950s, various styles such as figurative, semi-figurative, and abstract art were beginning to emerge with fervor. Amidst receiving attention on his refreshing figurative paintings in France, too, in 1959, Kanayama met with an untimely death at the young age of 33. Through approximately 70 works by Kanayama and an additional 70 or so works by his friends such as NOMIYAMA Gyoji and TABUCHI Yasukazu (Yasse), the fervent trends in painting in Paris of the 1950s are reviewed.
