All Begun in Kamakura 1951-2016
Part2.1966-1984:The Museum as a Disseminator

July 4 - October 4, 2015

The Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura & Hayama began in Kamakura in 1951. The Kamakura building, which became commonly known as the Kamakura Kinbi (Kamakura MoMA), is to bring its function as an art museum to an end in 2016. In its final year, fiscal 2015, its approximately 65-year history is looked back on in three parts.
In 1966, a new building was added, providing more exhibition space and facilitating exhibitions larger in scale. It was during this period that exhibitions of works on loan from abroad such as the Munch and Klee retrospectives, which marked record-breaking numbers of visitors, began.
Part 2 examines two decades of the Museum's activities from 1966 to 1984, when the Kamakura Annex was opened, together with its collection.
At the Kamakura Annex, modern Japanese prints, which account for a large proportion of the collection,Western prints from Brueghel to Klinger, and Chinese woodcuts are on show.
