All Begun in Kamakura 1951-2016
Part 3. 1951-1965
The Birth of The Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura

October 17, 2015 - January 31, 2016

The Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura & Hayama began in Kamakura in 1951. The Kamakura building, which became commonly known as the Kamakura Kinbi (Kamakura MoMA), is to bring its function as an art museum to an end in 2016. In its final year, fiscal 2015, its approximately 65-year history is looked back on in three parts.

Part 3 focuses on the initial stage from the planning and construction of what became commonly known as the Kamakura Museum of Modern Art, designed by the architect Sakakura Junzo, to 1965 through works, photographs, and reference materials related to the exhibitions organized in those days.

At the Kamakura Annex, craftwork and its development into contemporary art is examined from a present-day viewpoint.
