Museum Collection 3: A Universe of Reflections
Special Feature: Kaoru Ueda
January 28 - March 26, 2017
The surface of the water, glass, soap bubbles…the
images that are reflected in a transparent "mirror"
appear somewhat like a "shadow" of reality as they
incessantly fluctuate bearing an indistinct contortion.
With focus on prints by Kiyoshi Hasegawa, Yozo
Hamaguchi, and others, images of "reflections" filtered
into realistic depictions are traced.
The special feature corner introduces Kaoru Ueda
(b.1928). During the 1970s, with eggs and bottles as his
subject, he established a realism of his own and also
turned his eyes to the flow of water or the change of
the atmosphere. The images as if the reflecting light
and colors themselves have been reproduced on his
canvas invite the viewer beyond reality to a universe of
"reflections".
Two exhibitions are held simultaneously; "Japanese Art of the 1950s: Starting Point after the War" at Gallery 2 and 3, "Museum Collection 3: A Universe of Reflections/ Special Feature: Kaoru Ueda" at Gallery 1.
