Max Klinger: The 160th Anniversary of His Birth

September 16 - November 5, 2017

Max Klinger (1857-1920) is a sculptor, painter, and printmaker active in Germany. Our museum has exhibited his prints repeatedly from April 1981 on. His prints have both precise realism and evocative fantasy that create mysterious charm.
This exhibition marks the 160th anniversary of Klinger's birth. We introduce his prominent prints from our collection and others (Drama from Machida City Museum of Graphic Arts and On Death Part 2 from Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art). In addition, we present his bookplates including the one for Wilhelm von Bode(1845-1929) who later became the director of Berlin State Museums.

-Two exhibitions are held simultaneously; "Max Klinger: The 160th Anniversary of His Birth" at Gallery 1 and 2, "From Museum Collection: 1937 - Modernism at a Branch Point" at Gallery 3.
