ONO Motoe 1919-1947
September 22 - December 24, 2012
ONO Motoe (1919-1947) is the five-year-elder brother of SHIMURA Fukumi (b.1924) who designated a living national treasure. Aspiring to become an artist, Ono went to Tokyo and studied at Bunka Gakuin. While being influenced by contemporary artists such as MURAYAMA Kaita, MATSUMOTO Shunsuke, and KISHIDA Ryusei, he painted pictures of Nikolai Cathedral in Surugadai, Tokyo, where shadows of the war were approaching, in methods of his own. As he died of an illness at the young age of 28, his works were hardly presented in public during his lifetime. This exhibition introduces approximately 130 works by the artist Ono Motoe, who has never been discussed in the history of art until now.
