Energetic Individuality in Japanese Art of the Taisho Era

April 8 - June 18, 2017



The Taisho period was a time during which, while carrying on the flow from the Meiji period, young people seeking unrestricted expressions brought innovative art into bloom. KISHIDA Ryusei and YOROZU Tetsugoro set up the Fusain Society in 1912 (Taisho 1) and SEKINE Shoji and MURAYAMA Kaita were active at the Nika Association established in 1914. In the 1920s, MURAYAMA Tomoyoshi and others led the avant-garde. The spirit of this period is surveyed along with an introduction of new acquisitions.

  • The exhibition ticket of "SUNAZAWA Bikky" also entitles entry to "From Museum Collection: Energetic Individuality in Japanese Art of the Taisho Era" for the day of purchase.
  • "Family Communication Day" - reduced entry for all family members (except for 65 and over) accompanied by a child under 18 on the first Sunday of every month.
  • Free admission day: May 18 (International Museum Day)
