"Artists Today XI: SUMI WAKIRO & HATAKEYAMA NAOYA"
6 January - 25 March 2007
The Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura
Since 1988, the Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura & Hayama has been organizing the exhibition entitled “Artists Today” selecting two active contemporary artists. For its 11th exhibition, sculptor, SUMI Wakiro and photographer HATAKEYAMA Naoya has been selected to present some of their latest works.
[SUMI WAKIRO Corridor of Light]
SUMI Wakiro (1950-) has pursued the possibilities of sculpture focusing mainly on cast bronze. In the 1970s, he worked on brass and iron sculptures with critical view towards minimal art. His bronze sculptures in the 80s figured mass as its dominant aspect but it also questioned the idea of appearance as well. It was also at this time that he commenced his painting-like sculpture series called “Veil”. From the year 2000, he started his series “Dance” invoking the human body. His latest work combines his traditional bronze sculpture with an alien material: light (neon tubes), displaying a new perspective to his work. This exhibition will show the divers aspect of the artist through his representative and latest works. There will also be an installation displaying his work environment composed of drawings and wax.
[HATAKEYAMA NAOYA Draftsman's Pencil]
HATAKEYAMA Naoya (1958-) became known for his photographic series depicting limestone quarries started in the late 80s and the series depicting urban sceneries. After winning the Kimura Ihei Memmorial Award of Photography in 1997, his world wide activities include the Venice Biennial (2001), San Paolo Biennial (2005), and several retrospectives in Japan and overseas (2002), he is considered one of the most active Japanese photographers since the 1990s.
This exhibition entitled “Draftsman’s Pencil” centers around urban images taken this 10 years examining the superficial aspect of the city and questioning what is considered "natural". A total of 180 photographs divided into 17 works and series will be on display.
