About the Exhibition
Here we present two books by Henri Matisse (1869-1954): Jazz (1947) with stencilled illustrations; and his book of lithograph prints, Poèmes de Charles d'Orléans (1950). These illustrated books, wonderfully showcasing Matisse’s lucid line drawings and vivid approach to colouration, were acquired by nihon-ga artist Hōshun Yamaguchi(1893-1971). In this exhibition we introduce these books, introduced into the museum collection as part of the Hōshun Yamaguchi library, alongside copies of the French art review, Verve.
