The Works of Isamu Wakabayashi – Donations from Takanori Kawai
About the Exhibition
This exhibition marks the inaugural exhibition of the Kawai Collection: a selection of work by Isamu Wakabayashi donated by Takanori Kawai. Encompassing over a hundred pieces, this new addition to the museum collection comprises sculptures, drawings, paintings, hand-crafted books, and home-made new years cards. Wakabayashi, who garnered attention in the 1960s for his work in iron, went on to engage with a range of materials including copper, lead, wood, and sulphur; this collection traces the development of his creation which eventually sought to include such substances as air, water, and light into his sculpture. In encountering these works, we go on to inherit the dialogues they represent.
