About the Exhibition
In the period immediately after the Second World War, Katsuhiro Yamaguchi (1928–2018) was a trailblazer who pioneered a new kind of Japanese media art. This exhibition draws upon new discoveries elicited by recent research into Yamaguchi’s diaries, painting a fuller picture of his enquiries into overseas art movements, the formation of the artist group Jikken Kobo [Experimental Workshop], and their activities with APN. These are presented alongside the works of fellow artists such as Shozo Kitadai, Hideko Fukushima and Kiyoji Otsuji, and related materials. We also investigate the birth and development of Yamaguchi’s seminal early Vitrines series.
