From the collection of works KITANI Makoto donated to our museum, we will be showing approximately 40 namazu-e [catfish pictures] and copperplate prints dating from the Meiji period. Mr. Kitani did exhaustive research on Charles Meryon (1821-1868), a copperplate print artist who was a contemporary of the 19th century French poet Charles Baudelaire. Also on show are 40 or so 19th century Western prints treasured by this collector. ¬e world of Kitani Makoto is reconstructed through altogether 80 works.
