Japanese Art of the 1950s: Starting Point after the War

January 28 - March 26, 2017

Five years after the end of World War II, in 1950, Japan was still under occupation. From April 1952, it started out as an independent state. Presented here are works by Chimei Hamada, who is known for his series of copperplate prints entitled Elegy for a New Conscript, Kikuji Yamashita, who questioned absurd incidents through his paintings, the activities undertaken by Jikken Kobo (Experimental Workshop) in search of free expressions beyond genres, and Yasuki Kanayama and Gyoji Nomiyama, who went to study in Paris shortly after the war in attempt to create new paintings. We shall look back from our present viewpoint at the trends of the artists in the 1950s endeavoring to produce a new art even though the wounds from the war had not yet healed.

Two exhibitions are held simultaneously; "Japanese Art of the 1950s: Starting Point after the War" at Gallery 2 and 3, "Museum Collection 3: A Universe of Reflections/ Special Feature: Kaoru Ueda" at Gallery 1.
