The Collection of the National Museum of Ethnology : Shell Road
About the Exhibition
From ancient times, shells have passed into the hands of all kinds of people all over the world and shellwork has been devised as an original culture. Shell beads have been excavated from approximately 100,000 year-old ruins, suggesting that by stringing shells on a cord, social authority was demonstrated and by decorating ritual or incantatory costumes and masks with shells, people identified further value in shells beyond a simple tool. Introduced in this exhibition are approximately 160 examples of African, Asian and Oceanian, shellwork from the collection of the National Museum of Ethnology. We hope that while discovering the richness of their forms, you will be able to understand their social backgrounds or the cultures of everyday life and reconsider how our relationship with shells has been fostered.
