About the Exhibition

The exhibition focuses on those works from the Japanese-style painting collection of The Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura & Hayama which have never been shown at the museum before, or have not been exhibited for over 20 years. You may be surprised by some unexpected works, such as the folding screen Flowers and Grasses by Kano Tansetsu (1655–1714), who was active in the early Edo period, the restored folding screen Young Reeds by Ushida Keison (1890–1976), and the sketch for Dragon in Clouds (ceiling painting of Kenchoji Temple) by Koizumi Junsaku (1924–2012). Please take this opportunity to see them. In addition, as a special feature, we exhibit folding screens depicting ukiyo-e artists related to Tsutaya Juzaburo, such as Tsuragamae: Toshusai Sharaku and Tsuragamae: Kitagawa Utamaro and Torii Kiyonaga from Kataoka Tamako’s (1905–2008) Tsuragamae Series.
