Artists in Shonan

January 24 - March 22, 2015

Habits such as bathing in the sea and enjoying recreation were introduced from the West in the Meiji period and a culture characteristic of an area of holiday homes emerged around Sagami Bay. In the Taisho period, KISHIDA Ryusei and YOROZU Tetsugoro spent time in convalescence in Shonan and their fervor for creating was handed down to CHOKAI Seiji and HARA Seiichi. The scenic beauty commanding views of Mount Fuji and Hakone captivated many artists such as YAMAGUCHI Hoshun and ASAI Kan'emon, who stayed or set up a studio in Shonan, and it serves as the working base for a variety of artists to this day. Presented here are the achievements of artists who produced works in Shonan and spent their lives there.
