1937 - Modernism at a Branch Point

September 16 - November 5, 2017



1937, when war intensified on the Chinese Continent and Japan rapidly became militaristic, was a turning point in avant-garde art.     Together with works by ASO Saburo, MURAI Masanari, and YOSHIHARA Jiro, focusing on the "International Exhibition of Surrealism" and the graphic magazine USSR in Construction, this exhibition examines what the art scene was like eighty years ago.

-Two exhibitions are held simultaneously; "Max Klinger: The 160th Anniversary of His Birth" at Gallery 1 and 2, "From Museum Collection: 1937 - Modernism at a Branch Point" at Gallery 3.

  • The exhibition ticket of "Max Klinger" also entitles entry to "From Museum Collection: 1937" for the day of purchase.
  • "Family Communication Day" - reduced entry for all family members (except for 65 and over) accompanied by a child under 18 on the first Sunday of every month.
  • Free admission day: November 3 (Cultural Day / Japanese National Holiday)
