OKAZAKI KAZUO
Garden of Supplements

11 September - 3 November 2010

Okazaki Kazuo (b.1930) studied Art History and began making steel sculptures in the late 1950s. Since 1963, he has created art objects and installations with the concept of “Gyobutsu Hoi” (Object Supplement), a coined term from the Japanese word for object (gyobutsu; honorable things) and supplement (hoi) until the present day.
A “supplement” adds something from the periphery to missing parts of existing objects. Okazaki presents the forms of things that appear unexpectedly when our viewpoint is shifted from an ordinary way of seeing. He turns things inside out, reverses the bumps and hollows of things, switches materials, and employs small tricks to make objects that cause ripples in the mind of the viewer and open up our closed way of seeing things. This new way of seeing makes the world appear in a different way than usual.
The concept of “supplement” has been expanded in scale and space to take in the entire surrounding environment, something that has taken place in conjunction with the development of the HISASHI series.
For this exhibition, the Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura, a representative modernist structure designed by Sakakura Junzo that opened in 1951, and the relationship between the interior and exterior of the building and the natural environment is treated overall as a “Garden of Supplements”.
We hope that you will take your time looking at the exhibition and let Okazaki’s art penetrate and stimulate your mind. 44 works are on display, including previously unexhibited.
