Yoshida Katsuro: Touching Things, Landscapes, and the World

About the Exhibition

Yoshida Katsuro (1943-1999), who learned from Saitoh Ghiju (Yoshishige) at Tama Art University, started to concentrate on producing works that combined objects and allowed their characteristics to naturally manifest themselves from 1969. This trend was later dubbed "Mono-ha (School of Things)" and drew international attention, with Yoshida as one of the pioneers of the movement. While working with objects, Yoshida also began to produce prints that explored the relationship between objects and the viewer's eye, using photographs of familiar landscapes that he had taken himself as subject matter.
By 1971, he had moved away from the Mono-ha style and he continued to explore pictorial expression in the 1970s, experimenting with transfer and other techniques. Toward the end of the 1970s, he produced works that transferred the impression of brushstrokes on a wall to canvas. In the early 1980s, he created the Heat Haze series, which depicted landscapes and the human body in abstract form, and later the Touch series, in which organic shapes were created by rubbing powdered graphite with the artist's fingers. Yoshida passed away in 1999 at the age of 55.
This exhibition is the first retrospective of Yoshida Katsuro to provide a complete presentation of his career. Several of his works, hitherto rarely seen by the public, as well as his production notes showing his planning and concepts, have been researched and are featured in the exhibition. While confronting the art trends of his time, when the art world was undergoing dramatic changes, Yoshida continued to earnestly ask questions about his own artistic choices and path.
