KAWAI Gyokudo: A Retrospective

Born in Aichi in 1873 (Meiji 6), KAWAI Gyokudo (1873-1957) grew up in Gifu.
By blending the styles of the Maruyama-Shijo School and the Kano School, he pioneered a new direction in the nihonga [Japanese-style painting] circles.
He attached great importance to expressions employing lines and sumi ink from his young days and became known for his nostalgic landscapes depicting seasonal views of nature. He continued to be deeply attached to views of the countryside and the mountains and portrayed scenes full of poetic sentiment which anyone would imagine fondly.
This exhibition reconfirms “archetypal scenes of Japan,” many of which have disappeared nowadays and people have forgotten about, by examining how Gyokudo viewed them and how he expressed them.
