SUDA Kunitaro: Looking Back 50 Years After His Death

7 April- 27 May 2012

While studying aesthteics and art history at Kyoto Imperial University, SUDA Kunitaro(1891-1961) also studied drawing at Kansai Bijutsuin. He then went to study in Spain, where he did research on color theory of the Venetian School and the chiaroscuro in Baroque paintings. After returning to Japan, based on Western paintings, he endeavored continuously to produce oil paintings unique to Japan. The fruits of his efforts were presented mainly at Dokuritsu Bijutsu Kyokai exhibitions. This exhibition features the works presented at SUDA's first individual exhibition held at Shiseido Gallery in Ginza, Tokyo in 1932 and the works he submitted to the Dokuritsu Bijutsu Kyokai exhibitions. Through approximately 130 major works depicting landscapes, flowers, birds and animals, this retrospective looks back on the world of SUDA Kunitaro, who reached a uniquely profound state.
