The Zenith of Russian Modern Painting
Ilya Repin
Master Works from The State Tretyakov Gallery

April 6 – May 26, 2013

Ilya Repin (1844-1930) was a realist painter who was active in Russia from the late 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century under the Czarist regime. Not only did he paint works such as They Did Not Expect Him, a discerning portrayal of the society of the time, and Princess Sofya, which treats the history of his native country, but also left many portraits of representative figures of the splendor of Russian culture such as the composer Modest Mussorgsky and the writer Leo Tolstoy, and those of his family.
There will be 79 oil paintings, watercolors, and drawings on view from The State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow enabling us to trace Repin's achievements as the greatest master of modern Russian Realism from the early years to late in his life.
