WAR/ART 1940-1950
Sequences and Transformations of Modernism
July 6 – October 14, 2013
Japan in the 1940s was a trying decade for the artists due to the war, but it was also a period hidden with rich potentials of the maturity and diversion of modernism. From Spirit of Japan (Mt.Fuji) painted by YOKOYAMA Taikan in 1940 to The Hiroshima Panels by MARUKI Iri and Toshi (of which Panels 1 to 4 will be displayed in two sessions), works by artists who were active before and after the war such as ASAI Kan’emon, FUJITA
Tsuguharu, MATSUMOTO Shunsuke, YAMAGUCHI Hoshun, DOMON Ken, and YAMASHITA Kikuji will be shown together with plenty of reference materials. The history of Japanese art which has hitherto been divided into prewar, wartime, and postwar art will be re-examined in the context of “art of the 1940s".
