Naojiro Harada Retrospective

April 8 - May 15, 2016



Naojiro HARADA(1863-1899) was born in Edo (now Tokyo) in the closing days of the Tokugawa shogunate. Growing up in an environment open to Western culture, he studied Western-style painting under Yuichi Takahashi, and went to Munich, Germany in 1884 for study.
Harada attended the Academy of Fine Arts as the first Japanese student and privately studied under painter Gabriel von Max. Harada met in Munich his lifelong friend, Ogai MORI, who wrote the novel "Utakata no Ki" with a character modeled after the painter.
Harada returned home in 1887 when the movement for the preservation of traditional Japanese art and the rejection of Western counterpart was gaining momentum in Japan. While in the face of adversity, Harada advocated and promoted Western-style painting, energetically presenting his works at exhibitions. In 1890 Harada sent his challenging Kannon Bodhisattva Riding the Dragon (now Important Cultural Property) to the third Domestic Industrial Exposition. Showing a religious Japanese motif painted using Western techniques freely, this monumental piece has caused a lot of controversy even to this day. In 1889 Harada opened his private art school Shobi-kan in his home in Hongo, Tokyo, that raised the next generation of painters. Unfortunately, Harada got ill shortly thereafter, and died at the age of 36.
Although his career as a painter was prematurely cut short, Harada's masterly skills and ideas for the promotion of Western-style painting left a noteworthy achievement in the history of modern Japanese art. This retrospective presents the painter's works spanning his entire career and related materials, along with pieces by his teachers, students, and friends, to trace Naojiro Harada's footsteps.
